"In recent days we have seen a significant progress in fighting corruption," said the expert when asked to express his opinion about anti-corruption reforms in Ukraine. In particular, Herbst believes the nomination of a new anti-corruption prosecutor in Ukraine was a success. "This is a good step forward," he said. Meanwhile, the expert lauded the processes that resulted in a statement made by the legislator of the Rada Mykola Martynenko about his intention to step down. On the other hand, Herbst continued, there still exist "systemic issues" that remain unresolved in Ukraine. He noted these issues are extremely important in a dialogue between the West and Ukrainian authorities. "I think that the United States and the European Union are fully aware of these issues and continue to expect from the President and Prime Minister of Ukraine serious steps, particularly relating to comprehensive reforms of the General Prosecutor's Office and the judiciary," John Herbst said.
