She arrived in Kyiv on May 25 after being exchanged for two Russian army officers captured in eastern Ukraine and convicted of fighting alongside separatists. In March, Savchenko was sentenced to 22 years in prison for alleged involvement in the killing of two Russian journalists in eastern Ukraine. She denied any role in the incident. At her May 27 press conference, Savchenko said she would prefer to return to her job as a military pilot, but repeated that she was ready to do whatever Ukraine needed, including being president. Savchenko's custody and trial have been condemned by Kyiv and Western governments critical of Moscow's role in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which broke out after Russia's military seizure of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula.
