Hahn considers Ukraine's response sanctions counterproductive

European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn has called on the Russian Federation to abandon the restrictions imposed on transit of Ukrainian goods. However, he believes possible retaliatory sanctions imposed by Ukraine on Russian transit are counterproductive.Hahn noted he understands temptation for Ukraine to do the same thing in retaliation. However, in his opinion, it will not benefit economic development.

As reported,  on January 1, 2016 a decree was issued establishing that international transit road and rail transportation of goods from Ukraine to Kazakhstan through the territory of Russia are carried out only from the territory of Belarus. The  decree dated July 1 was promulgated, which tightens the regulations. Now they also apply to transit to Kyrgyzstan, as well as introduce a full ban on transit of goods being "under embargo."

The government of Ukraine announced the intention to immediately introduce countermeasures against Russia's strengthening trade war, but has only extended the response embargo on some Russian goods until the end of 2017
