Poroshenko insists on creation of international tools to protect IDPs' rights

"It is necessary to develop such an international mechanism of responsibility as soon as possible along with binding international frameworks to protect IDPs' rights," the Ukrainian president said at a UN General Assembly meeting on refugees and migrants on Monday. "It is time to re-establish the position of a Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on IDPs," he added. According to him, an unprecedented migration crisis and the flow of refugees have become an important test for all mankind, as more than 250 million people had to flee their homes for various reasons. "This global crisis requires our shared responsibility and coordinated efforts," the President said. According to him, external aggression and state-sponsored terrorism are the enemies of mankind in many parts of our world. "Russian armed aggression forced about 1.8 million Ukrainians to seek a new home within the country. And because of this, Ukraine is now among ten countries with the largest number of displaced people," Poroshenko said. "However, all our efforts will be in vain unless the very origins foreign aggression and violation of international law are addressed," the president said. "We have no right to turn a blind eye to bombardment by Russia of civilian facilities in Syrian Aleppo or in Ukrainian Donbas," he added. Poroshenko also stressed the need for making liable the state that violates international law and fundamental freedoms, forcing civilians to leave their home.
