Russia keeps violating Convention on Elimination of Racial Discrimination in occupied Crimea – Foreign Ministry

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mariana Betsa posted this on Twitter, commenting on the next refusal of the Crimean court to release Akhtem Chyigoz under house arrest. "Russia keeps violating the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination contrary to the ICJ order. We demand to release Chiygoz," Mariana Betsa wrote. As reported, April 24, the so-called Supreme Court of Crimea refused to change the pre-trial restriction in form of detention for the house arrest in the trial of Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Akhtem Chyigoz, who has been being held in the Simferopol remand prison for more than two years. April 19, the International Court of Justice indicated provisional measures against Russia in Ukraine v. Russia case in accordance with the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. “Reminding the Russian Federation of its duty to comply with its obligations under CERD, the Court considers that, with regard to the situation in Crimea, the Russian Federation must refrain, pending the final decision in the case, from maintaining or imposing limitations on the ability of the Crimean Tatar community to conserve its representative institutions, including the Mejlis. In addition, the Russian Federation must ensure the availability of education in the Ukrainian language” the ICJ order reads.
